Work Unit|Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories

Faculty and staff at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories ( VDL ) are among the nation’s finest in their fields of expertise and offer comprehensive diagnostic services. The mission of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory ( VDL ) is to provide timely, accurate and pertinent animal disease diagnostic services and educational outreach to veterinarians, animal industries and animal interests. The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory will strive to meet the goals the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and the University through research to develop new approaches to disease identification, investigation, prevention and through education of professional veterinary medical, graduate, and post-doctoral students.

Position Summary

This position will open mail/ UPS /Federal Express packages, accession samples, and route samples to appropriate lab(s). This position will drive a CSU vehicle to perform the daily courier route to retrieve specimens from local customers and requires a valid driver license.. The individual will also greet the public in person as well as on the phone, answering questions regarding sample submission. Sample handling may include spinning tubes containing blood or other body fluids (possibly infectious), transferring plasma or serum to another tube, and/or splitting specimens to route to multiple laboratory sections. This position requires heavy lifting (approximately 40-50 pounds). This unit is an essential services area and may be open on CSU closure days – ability to work on these days is required. Hourly pay rate is determined by relevant experience.

Position Minimum Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to deliver outstanding customer service. Experience working independently as well as a contributing member of a team. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills. Attention to detail and ability to uphold confidentiality policies. Flexibility and the ability to adapt to changing priorities. Ability to lift and transfer 40-50 pounds.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiarity working in veterinary environment and use of medical terminology.

Duty/Responsibility

Open packages received through the mail, couriers (Fedex, UPS , local), campus mail service, or those dropped off by students or area clinics. Review submission form(s) to ensure all information is accurate. Based on the sample and test requested: assign accession number(s) and route specimens with necessary form(s) to the appropriate area/section/laboratory. Submission documents are scanned into LIMS system before routing. Separate samples by centrifugation. Distributes blood, body fluids, urine and other samples to appropriate laboratory sections. Position rotates through a series of duties during the morning and will be primarily responsible for receiving and routing of samples in the afternoon along with other employees. Overtime work may be required.
