Description of Work Unit

Colorado State University is seeking a Senior Director of Campaign Planning and Volunteer Engagement. This position will manage campaign strategy for the next capital campaign for CSU and coordinate volunteers who serve on various college and department councils.

Position Summary

The Senior Director of Campaign Planning and Volunteer Engagement will be responsible for planning, coordinating and managing all campaign activities and creating a master campaign plan for CSU’s next comprehensive campaign and effectively engaging volunteers who serve on college and department boards and councils.

The Senior Director of Campaign Planning and Volunteer Engagement will report directly to the Associate Vice President for University Philanthropy.

Required Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution by employment start date.

  • Eight years of professional experience in fundraising, sales, or strategic planning for an institution of higher education or another large, complex organization.

  • Demonstrated success in leading detailed, complex strategic planning processes at large organizations and with multiple stakeholders

  • A demonstrated ability to engage and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.

  • The ability to travel locally and out of state, and work non-standard hours including evening and weekends.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Experience leading campaign strategy and initiatives for multi-million or billion-dollar capital campaigns.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience working in a CRM or other relational database such as Ascend, Advance, or Blackbaud

  • Advanced written and verbal communication, must have excellent interpersonal skills. Demonstrated success in volunteer management, strategic planning, and event planning. Knowledge of higher education fundraising and contemporary issues/best practices in the field.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop cross-functional partnerships, foster collaboration and gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including College Deans, Directors of Development, faculty, active board members, high level administrators, and donors.

  • Successful candidate must have the following attributes: initiative, attention to detail, timeliness, discretion, sound judgment, and an entrepreneurial spirit.

  • Understands and is able to articulate a commitment to the mission of the University and University Advancement

  • Exceptional organizational and management skills to articulate and realize complex goals and objectives through strategic planning. Previous experience managing budgets and financial processes with a strong fiscal acumen.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Participates in campaign strategy development and serve as a campaign liaison between Advancement and designated areas of the University to support campaign priorities.

  • Chair the Campaign Planning Committee as well as manage the relationships with chairs of other strategic campaign committees.

  • Provides leadership for the next comprehensive campaign including strategic planning, management, execution and coordination of other divisions in order to achieve goals.

  • Convenes work groups, facilitates difficult or complex discussions, manages progress and otherwise makes sure assigned initiatives are successful. Responsible for fundraising support of the comprehensive strategy.

  • Develop and clearly communicate efforts, benchmark peer institutions to identify best practices and innovative ideas in campaign strategy.

  • Design, plan, and accomplish strategically identified, cross functional projects and campaign process improvements to enhance individual, team, and organizational performance with other University divisions, colleges, and faculty across campus.

  • Set goals for the campaign sprints.

  • Monitor work quality and ensure accuracy and deadlines of project responsibilities of the team. Coordinate all marketing material preparation for each campaign sprint.

  • Work with development units to create feasibility studies prior to launching campaign projects, particularly capital projects. Assist University Advancement leadership council with special projects as assigned.

  • Actively engage with both the mission, vision and values of various units and University Advancement. Consistently work toward elevated cultural competency and self-growth on the topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Develop and execute comprehensive strategies for recruiting volunteers among alumni, parents, and community members to support university events and initiatives.

  • Organize training sessions and orientations for volunteers, ensuring they are prepared to represent the university professionally and effectively.

  • Maintain accurate volunteer records and databases, tracking volunteer hours and contributions for reporting and recognition purposes.

  • Cultivate positive relationships with volunteers by providing regular communication, recognition, and opportunities for personal and professional development.

  • Collaborate with colleges and departments to identify volunteer needs and strategically recruit volunteers to meet those needs.

  • Coordinate volunteer schedules and assignments for university events, ensuring appropriate coverage and support.

  • Evaluate volunteer programs through surveys and feedback mechanisms, implementing improvements to enhance volunteer engagement and program effectiveness within the university community.

  • Examines events, programming, and communications with a lens of diversity and inclusion for the audience, ensuring that events welcome guests from all backgrounds and is representative of various identities.
