Description of Work Unit

The Department of Agricultural Biology is committed to excellence in the creation and dissemination of knowledge about plants, insects, and microbes. Agricultural Biology focuses its teaching, research, and outreach missions in four program areas: 1) Genomics and Molecular Biology, 2) Ecology and Biodiversity, 3) Biology and Management of Invasive Species, and 4) Integrated Pest Management. Being interdisciplinary in nature, Agricultural Biology values cooperative and collaborative efforts within departmental teams, other research teams within the University, and external partners (e.g., public land agencies, crop grower associations, private landowners, industry, and others).

The Department has 23 faculty, three administrative staff, 66 graduate students, and 55 undergraduate students.

Position Summary

We seek an engaged, innovative, and visionary leader and accomplished scientist to catalyze new initiatives and collaborations, identify strategic priorities, and provide leadership in research, scholarship, education, and outreach/extension. Opportunities exist for the successful candidate to continue an active role in research, teaching and/or engagement. The exact position appointment is negotiable within the range of 70-90% for leadership/administration and 10-30% in research, teaching, and/or engagement.

The person in this 12-month, full-time tenured faculty position will represent and advocate for the Department to internal and external constituencies, as well as the CSU administration. A successful candidate will be poised to engage students, faculty, staff, and alumni to strengthen initiatives within and outside the Department, CSU Extension, the College of Agricultural Sciences, and local and regional campuses and field stations. Further, they will take a leadership role in developing and maintaining the department’s strategic plan, giving performance reviews of faculty and administrative staff, and creating and managing the department’s budget. This person will work with a range of constituencies, including faculty, students, other departments and colleges, and external partners to foster a strategic and innovative program. Important goals of the new Head include preserving and enhancing the stature and reputation of the Department in research, teaching, outreach, and diversity.

Required Job Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent degree in the life sciences from an accredited institution.

  • Sustained record of scholarship (teaching, research, and/or engagement) commensurate with rank of full professor

  • Experience in leading and managing people and resources to maintain scholarly programs in teaching, research, and/or engagement
