Position Summary

CSU Mountain Campus Medical Clinic

Under new management from CSU Health Network Medical Services, the Medical Clinic at the CSU Mountain Campus provides onsite acute first aid and pre-hospital care to patients for minor injuries and illnesses on a walk-in basis. The Medical Clinic has designated clinic hours and 24-hour nursing assistance for students and guests with acute and emergent concerns. Access to after-hours mental health professionals ensures the support of students and guests with behavioral health concerns. This position assists in the delivery of safe healthcare to university students and guests.

Employment Season

The employment season is from Mid-May to Mid-October.

  • Summer: approximately 5/1/24 through 7/19/24

  • Fall: approximately 7/20/24 through 10/11/2024

Position Information

This position is a temporary hourly Registered Nurse that lives and works at the Mountain Campus Medical Clinic to provide clinical services when the full-time nurse is not working. This position reports directly to the Nurse Manager at the CSU Health Network Fort Collins campus.

Office Hours

The Registered nurse works in the office 6-7 hours per day. Typical office hours are of 6:30 AM – 9:00 AM and 3:30 PM – 6:30 PM daily. Bedtime office hours for medication administration as needed 8:30 PM – 9:30 PM during Eco-Experience weeks and lunch hour support 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM as necessary. These hours are subject to change to meet the needs of campus guests.

On-Site Availability

In addition to specified office hours, this position is expected to respond to emergent healthcare needs:

  • 24/7, unless other coverage has been arranged

  • Lodging: The Mountain Campus provides a Nurses cabin (341 sq ft) with two bedrooms (one room has a double bed and the other bedroom a bunk bed), kitchen, refrigerator, toilet, porch and in cabin wi-fi booster. Showers are available in a staff shower house. On-site laundry available. Housing may require a shared space and coordination with additional MTC nursing staff.

  • Family Members and Guests Welcome

  • Lodging: Invite partners, children, and other guests to stay with you for all or part of your time at the Mountain Campus. The Nurses Cabin can accommodate up to 4 people. Children must be supervised by a responsible adult during Nurse Clinic hours.

  • No pets permitted

  • Meals: Meals are provided for the Nurse and one guest with no extra cost. Meal tickets can be purchased in the office if additional guests are with you.

  • Activities

  • Hiking, fishing, mountain biking, trail running, rock climbing, nature photography, or lounging in a hammock with a good book are just some of the many activities employees can enjoy during their time in the picturesque Mountain Campus setting outside of office hours.

Position Minimum Qualifications

Licensure/Certification

  • Possession of current Registered Nurse license through the State of Colorado

  • Current certification in AHA approved Basic Life Support ( BLS )

Education

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university; or

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university AND Associate Degree in Nursing

Experience

  • One year of nursing experience in direct patient care

Conditions of Employment

  • Pre-employment Criminal Background Check – required for new hires

  • Use, Handling, or Exposure to hazardous materials – Must be willing and able to use, handle, or be exposed to hazardous materials with training

  • CSU Fort Collins and Mountain Campus medical clinics follow CDC guidelines for Employee Health in a healthcare setting, including proof of vaccinations. Employees must show proof of compliance/willingness to comply by start date

Preferred Qualifications

Experience

  • One season of CSU Mountain Campus experience

  • Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness First Aid certification

  • Experience in wilderness medicine, camp nursing, or urgent care

  • Experience working independently using treatment protocols and guidelines to provide patient care

  • Experience providing clinical services to college student population

  • Experience caring for diverse populations, including diverse religious/spiritual beliefs; racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds; diverse sexual orientations, and gender identities

  • Assesses and identifies health care needs by utilizing the principles of nursing practice and clinic protocols by collecting and evaluating data, making a treatment plan, and promoting wellness and positive lifestyle behaviors

  • Performs nursing care and treatments (such as wound and burn care)

  • Describes healthcare findings by documenting in the patient medical record using best-practice guidelines for SOAP documentation

  • Executes standing orders (for example, point of care testing and dispensing medications) appropriately and timely

  • Advises and instructs patients with acute and urgent health care problems by and acts as a resource by arranging for health care referrals off campus

  • Consults with Nurse Manager and Medical Director on patients where escalation of care may not be clear or when the possible need for EMS arises

  • Assists with medication administration for physician-prescribed medications for minor Mountain Campus guests who do not have a guardian present

  • Provides pre-hospital care and activation of the EMS system when emergency situations arise

  • Provides public health point of care testing on students, staff, and guests to ensure adherence to public health and infection control guidelines.
