Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located an hour north of the Denver metro area, Fort Collins is a vibrant community of approximately 157,000 residents that offers the convenience of a small town with all the amenities of a large city. Fort Collins is situated on the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains with views of 14,000 foot peaks, and offers access to numerous cultural, recreational, and outdoor opportunities.

The Horticulture and Landscape Architecture department strives to discover, apply, and disseminate knowledge and technology while developing future leaders in the state, the nation, and the world. Through hands-on experiential learning in each of our three majors, Environmental Horticulture, Horticulture, and Landscape Architecture, we encourage human engagement with the landscape and demonstrate our focus to solve problems for people, agriculture, and the environment through scholarship and creativity fostered by teamwork and individual diversity.

Position Summary

The postdoctoral fellow will consult with the Department’s experts on existing cold hardiness prediction models in order to determine an efficient automation pipeline to incorporate all of the model’s inputs as well as the model’s engine. Currently, all model updates are performed manually and only 2-3 times per season due to the time-intensive nature of the data collection and model generation. The goal is to develop automation to select the right data available online (e.g., location-specific temperature from weather stations) and feed them to prediction models, which can then be run automatically at regular intervals. The position requires programming skills, extensive experience in automating data acquisition, formatting, and modeling pipelines, as well as coordination with both the Department’s food science experts and CSU’s IT, to create an application that runs seamlessly on the Minas Lab website.
