Position Summary

The Department of Clinical Sciences at Colorado State University seeks applications for a 12-month tenure-track or non-tenure-track Instructor, Assistant, or Associate Professor in Comparative Ophthalmology. This position will be housed in the Department of Clinical Sciences located on the Veterinary Health Campus of Colorado State University. The clinical appointment will be in the Ophthalmology Service at the Colorado State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The CSU Ophthalmology Service within the James L Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital is a busy clinical service seeing approximately 3,000 cases a year that include dogs, cats, and horses as well as livestock/camelids, exotics, and zoo/aquarium/wildlife species. The successful candidate will participate in the clinical and didactic instructional activities of the professional veterinary medicine and post-graduate training programs related to ophthalmology as well as provide service to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital. This faculty position will be responsible for clinical service that involves coordination of the ophthalmology service, providing clinical care of patients, teaching veterinary medical students, training ophthalmology residents and interns, providing nighttime and weekend back-up for ophthalmology residents and consultation with referring veterinarians and pet owners.

The appointment will have a 25-45% service appointment, a 10-40% research commitment and a 25-45% teaching commitment dependent on experience and track (continuing or tenure-track). It is the intent that this individual will support both clinical and didactic teaching in the DVM program in the area of ophthalmology in animals. The position also will support client service and revenue generation in the VTH . The individual hired into this position is expected to have a 38% to 72% commitment to clinical teaching and service (e.g., a tenure track position generally would typically require 18-22 clinic weeks, a clinical instructor non-tenure position would typically require 30-34 weeks of clinic weeks). Clinical training of fellows, residents, DVM students, and interns is a requirement of this position as is providing state-of-the-art care for animals.

During the non-clinical time, the faculty member will share didactic teaching and service/outreach duties. These will include continuing education for local, regional, national, and international veterinary groups, providing phone and/or email consultation for veterinarians in Colorado and other states, development, and participation in professional continuing education for veterinarians, and participation in appropriate university, college, department, hospital, or professional committee work. The remaining time will be available for research/scholarly activity which may include collaborative research with other departmental faculty and participation in veterinary clinical trials. Scholarly activity will include professional and lay publications in the discipline of ophthalmology. This position is a 12-month, non-tenure track or tenure/track, academic appointment. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Funds are available to provide an appropriate start-up package. A signing bonus and coverage of moving expenses could be available/negotiated for successful candidates.

Required Job Qualifications

Instructor – Non-tenure track

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Completion of an American Board of Veterinary Ophthalmologists ( ABVO ) approved residency and board eligibility in American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists ( ACVO )

  • Upon completion of ABVO board certification, candidates will be eligible for promotion to Assistant Professor with a commensurate annualized salary increase.

Assistant Professor – Non-tenure track

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists ( ACVO )

Assistant Professor – Tenure track

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists ( ACVO )

Associate Professor – Non-tenure track

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists ( ACVO )

  • 5 years of experience at the Assistant Professor rank or equivalent

Associate Professor – Tenure track

  • DVM or equivalent veterinary professional degree

  • Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists ( ACVO )

  • Evidence of maintaining an independent or collaborative research program.

  • 5 years of experience at the Assistant Professor rank or equivalent

Preferred Job Qualifications

Instructor – Non-tenure track

  • Board eligibility in the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists ( ACVO ) or equivalent professional experience directly applicable to the primary area of instruction

Assistant/Associate Professor – Tenure/Non-tenure track

  • MS or PhD degree

  • Experience in instruction of DVM students and veterinary interns, residents, or graduate students

  • Completion of specialty board certification
