Description of Work Unit

The Fish, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology ( FWCB ) Department is comprised of over 150 faculty, postdocs, and graduate students who jointly address problems facing vertebrate systems. Research typically focuses on threats to native ecosystems worldwide including habitat loss and alteration, invasive species, emerging infectious diseases, climate change, and the interactive effects of these stressors. A leader in education, FWCB is the only program in Colorado to offer comprehensive undergraduate degrees and graduate degrees in fish and wildlife conservation and management. Our outreach and engagement efforts assist individuals, communities, and organizations to solve complex environmental problems and to be effective stewards of the planet’s fish and wildlife and the systems.

Position Summary

Fisheries Ecologist will build a database of fish barrier locations and installation designs and synthesize information on geomorphic, hydrologic, and biological factors considered in constructing fish barriers to prevent invasions by non-native species and protect native species upstream of the barriers. The incumbent will manage and analyze large spatial databases and interact with fisheries managers responsible for fish barrier installation. The incumbent will occasionally visit fish barrier sites and travel in the western USA to interact with fisheries managers.

Required Job Qualifications

  • MS degree in Fisheries, Aquatic Ecology, or a related field.

  • 2+ years’ Experience managing large spatial data in GIS and R.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

  • Experience driving to remote field sites and hiking up to 10 miles per day.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Knowledge on native fish ecology, spatial ecology, population genetics and dynamics.

  • Experience visualizing and analyzing spatial data, including meta-analysis and Bayesian statistics.

  • Experience working with fisheries managers at state and federal agencies to inform their management decisions based on science.

  • Publishing scientific work in peer-reviewed journals.
